Full Day Kindergarten The full day Kindergarten will be a fun and exciting year! Full day kindergarten is a very special experience. The partnership between parent and teacher is key to making the year a success. I will be in contact with you several times throughout the year. I hope you feel free to do the same. I am available any day of the week. Please call or send an email whenever you have a question or concern. It is best to contact me before and after school, as it is very difficult to interrupt class time. If you feel that you must talk with me during class hours, please do so, but let's be brief as that is my time with the children. I can be contacted at any time by email: . In order to make the year run as smoothly as possible the following information should be kept in a safe place for reference. I look forward to spending time with your child and family this year! HOURS School starts at 9:15. Your child cannot be on campus any earlier than 9:00. There will be no supervision on the playground until 9:00. School will be out at 3:30. There will be a minimum day once a month. This is a time that teachers will be in a training. The hours for minimum days are 9:00-1:20. You will receive a notice when the minimum days are coming. MEALS Your child will have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch at school everyday. Please be sure to fill out the lunch application and send it back to school as soon as possible. You will receive a monthly lunch calendar with the menu on at the beginning of each month. You are also free to send a sack lunch with your child if you prefer. BEHAVIORAL SYSTEM There is a behavioral system set up in the classroom called Blue Bears. Your child will start out on the Blue Bear every morning. From there, there is Green Bear: warning, Orange Bear: no recess, Red Bear: phone call home and Brown Bear: office referral. If your child loses his/her Blue Bear, he/she has the opportunity to earn it back throughout the day. If he/she has stayed on Blue Bear for the entire day, he/she will earn a sticker at the end of the day. If he/she has kept Blue Bear all week, then he/she will choose a prize from the prize box. IF YOU HAVE ANY DONATIONS FOR THE PRIZE BOX, THEY ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED. PRIZES INCLUDE SMALL TRINKETS AND CLEAN, USED TOYS. HOMEWORK Every night your Kindergartener will have a reading log sent home. They are to "read" the book that was sent home for the week with an adult. After they have read, the adult is to sign the reading log. It is crucial that you read any other favorite book to your child everyday as well. I know most parents are already reading to their children, so the reading log activity will fit into your routine at home. ? They are to take the reading log home in their folder, which is provided at the beginning of the school year, and return it with the reading log inside, everyday. This helps to build responsibility of homework and carrying something back and forth to school everyday. On occasion, there will be extra homework sent home that will also be in the folder. This homework includes math and other language arts activities a few days a week. Please check the agenda every evening for homework and important notices. AGENDA Your child will receive one agenda for the school year. The entire school will be using the agendas to help themselves stay organized. The homework is to be kept in this agenda. There is a special folder in the back of the agenda that can hold all papers and homework. They are meant for you to do with your child at home. The activities are NOT done in class. Please check this every evening!! It is important that you check it on a regular basis, in order to stay up to date on the happenings of the school and classroom. There are several wonderful activities in the agenda for you to do with your child. Please feel free to do these activities during free time, but please be sure to have the reading log and any other homework completed first. If the agenda is lost, your child will receive a photocopied version of the original. The agenda's are very expensive and we only have enough to provide one per student. FIELD TRIPS We will have a few field trips throughout the school year. If you would like to volunteer to go on the fieldtrips with us, please let me know. I will collect money for the field trips a few weeks before the trip. I will send several notices home to remind you before we leave. SUPPLIES Every child will need a full size backpack (please do not send small sized backpacks as our agendas and other materials will not fit) and a box of tissue. (If you can send more than one box, that would be great.) Your child will need a pair of child size scissors, crayons, glue and pencils that is available to them at home. A lot of the homework that is sent home requires these items. Please find a special place for these items at home (on top of the refrigerator, in a closet, under the bed, etc.) so that your child will be sure to have them when they are needed. CONFERENCES There will be one parent/teacher conference that will take place 10/15-10/19. This is a school wide conference week and every day during that week will be a minimum day: 9:00-1:20. This is very important to attend because we will sit down to discuss the progress your child is making. SLEEP A good night’s sleep will help your child come to school ready to learn. 10 to 12 hours is appropriate for 5 year olds. We have a long and busy day scheduled while your child is here. We know that a full day of school is a big adjustment for 5 year olds, especially if they have not experienced preschool. Making sure your child gets plenty of sleep every night helps. REST TIME There will be a rest period everyday in the Full Day Kindergarten. For the first 1-2 months the rest period will be mid-day for approximately 30 minutes. As the year goes on we will reduce the time to 20 minutes and eventually 15 minutes. You are more than welcome to send something to school such as a SMALL blanket or stuffed animal to be used during the rest time. CLOTHING Please print names on all clothing that your child might take off at school. When cold weather hits please dress your child in appropriate clothing (jackets, hats, mittens, etc.). Lois Allen can be a very cold place on stormy days. We only stay inside when it is raining or snowing hard. We will be outside in light rain and snow. When it is warm, please remember that open toe shoes and spaghetti straps are not appropriate for school. VOLUNTEERS We LOVE volunteers at Lois Allen. Our program is greatly enhanced by volunteers. There are many ways to volunteer. We encourage parents, grandparents, and others who wish to volunteer to please see the office for an application. BIRTHDAYS Birthdays are very important to five and six year olds. Please feel free to send in a treat the day of your child's birthday. I will let you know how many to send as our numbers change quite frequently. PLEASE DO NOT send birthday invitations to school. If there is not an invitation for every student, feelings get hurt. SNACK At the beginning of each month, or when you can, please send enough snack for your child's classmates. We love fresh fruit, granola bars, raisins, juice boxes, pretzels, crackers, cheese and just about anything you can think of. ATTENDANCE Regular school attendance is VERY crucial to your child's success in school. The district policy states that students may not miss more than 18 days in the school year. Please, please, please make sure that your child stays healthy and is ready to be at school everyday. If your child is ill, by all means keep them at home until they get healthy. Please call the school 674-4430 to let us know he/she will be out. Also be sure to send a note saying why your child was absent. When your child returns, he/she will receive make up work for the time they missed. PFO The parent/faculty organization is looking for some members! PLEASE join the pfo. All meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of every month at 3:00 in the library. The pfo does many things to help the school! Thank you for sharing your child with us this year. We are looking forward to the time we'll spend together. Remember, we are all part of a team, which includes you, your child, and the Lois Allen Staff. By working together, we can make this a special experience for your child. Please feel free to ask questions and to share concerns. |
