Welcome to the Lois Allen Library My name is Ms. O'Reilly and I am our school librarian. I have had the pleasure to be with your students one day a week for the past three years. I enjoy being able to teach your kids how to locate books using a computer, but also locating a fiction or non fiction books using the Dewey Decimal System, also known as the "numbers on the spin of the book". I'm proud to have the opportunity to teach them the value of the library system and that computers are great, but books are just as good, if not better when researching material, writing a report, or reading in bed. Our library is open from 11:30 to 3:30 every school day. Each class has approximately 30 minutes in the library. When the kinders through 2nd graders come to use the library they sit on the floor in front of my BIG comfy chair and I read them a story. Once our story is over they are free to find themselves a book. They may check out a book and use it until they come back the following week. If they didn't finish it, they may check it out again. By the time our kids are in 3rd through 6th grade they would rather not sit on the floor and hear a story, so I mix it up a little and we play word games or I work with their teachers on what subjects they may be studying and need a book for reference. These grades are allowed to check out two books per week because by the time they reach this level they are ready for a reading adventure. Each student that has a book needs to return it or recheck it out on their next class visit. I require that all books be returned to the library the week before we go off track or a week before we leave for summer break. Being a librarian means to keep a good inventory of books for our students and books don't come cheap, so we encourage the students to check them out and return them in the same shape they received them. If a book is lost or stolen we require that arrangements be made to replace the book. Please contact me if this ever happens with your student and we can work it out. I know how frustrating it can be for us not to have a library in Sun Valley, so I welcome you to check out a book or one of our parenting videos. Not only does the library belong to the school, but it belongs to everyone that is part of the Lois Allen community. You can help support our library, but visiting our book fair that is held in our library 2 to 3 times a year. Volunteers are always encouraged to help at Book fair, so if you're interested please contact our school or e-mail me, . Remember that reading and visiting libraries are very important to the development of your students' education and I encourage you to take them to a local library as often as possible. Sincerely, Teri O'Reilly |
