Important Update!

Advent Calendar

On Friday, April 24th, we will start a count down to the last 35 days of first grade. Please have your student bring in 35 of something that he/she can glue onto a calendar. Everyday you student will pull one off to count down the last days of school. Examples of things to bring: cheerios, dry beans, cotton balls, washers, or any other smallish items from home you don't need back. Look around your house and be creative! Don't forget to bring in 35 of them!

Thanks,

Hello Families! This is my fourth year teaching at Lois Allen and I'm having a great year! I have 12 smart students in my New Horizons class and we are seated happily in A-7. I have a Masters of Education degree from UNR and still enjoy and pursue my learning through district trainings and selected classes. I have a passion for teaching reading and writing and hopefully that rubs off on my students. When I’m not teaching you can probably find me boating with my husband and our 2 kids on Pyramid Lake.

My students and I follow 3 basic rules: show respect, make good decisions, and be problem solvers. When students demonstrate one of these principles they earn coins, which can later be spent at our class store, assuming they haven't pulled one of their 4 daily behavior cards. When a student makes a poor choice, he or she is asked pull 1 of these cards and expected to apologize. These cards determine your student's Citizenship Behavior grade on their report card. Students sit in cooperative groups of 4 students and can earn group points to later be spent on a prize from my personal stash. Every week I pick a Student of the Week, and monthly I choose a Student of the Month.

We spend most of our day focusing on learning math, writing, and reading. Everyone is learning and I see kids that finish early take it upon their own moral compass to go share their new knowledge and help the students who haven't finished yet. We are truly a class of helpful, considerate, honest, and caring students! I am just lucky to be their teacher.

Please look at your student's Agenda every night to see what their homework is and sign it. Your student earns coins for having their Agenda signed and their homework returned. My homework policy is Reading every night with a book sent home on Mondays and Wednesdays; Math sent home on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and a writing assignment that mirrors what we've done in class sent home on selected Mondays or Wednesday nights. All of this homework should be fairly independent for the student. Their homework grade is reflected as part of the report card heading Citizenship Academic. Please look for and read my 1st Grade Newsletter to come home the beginning of every month, it will have important dates and information about our class in it. If you can donate prizes, sanitizer wipes, glue sticks or Kleenex these are things are always needed and appreciated.

Each child at Lois Allen has a personal account set up on Study Island. Go here to work on math and reading skills, play games and learn about the Nevada Academic Standards.
