Mrs. Malley

Hello and welcome to Mrs. Malley's fourth grade class in room C-6! I look forward to meeting and working with you all. It is an honor and a pleasure to be your child's teacher. Working together we will help your child develop the skills needed to become a successful American Citizen.

We have a very exciting year ahead of us. We will be continuing to implement the Success-For-All Reading and Everyday Math programs. We will be continuing the secondary literacy block, which will focus on language skills, grammar and spelling.

We will also be focusing heavily on writing skills and the seven writing traits of good writing. In addition to these basic academic skills, fourth grade focuses on Nevada History. We hope to take several field trips to historical sites in our area, and hope many parents will be able to join us. These are just a few of the exciting academic pursuits we will tackle this year.

We will also be participating in several state and district assessments throughout the year. These include the CRT's (criterion referenced tests), a reading and math assessment called MAPs, district reading and math benchmarks, and a school-wide writing assessment (given three times during the year). We appreciate your support in preparing our students for these tasks. Information will be given to you later in the school year about these assessments and we will also discuss how to help your child be successful and do their best.

On this page you will find information about my classroom policies and expectations.Your support and enthusiasm is crucial to your child's success!

Consequences
  • All students will earn consequences for their behavior. I would prefer they earn all positive consequences, so I will make every attempt to catch a child being good and reward them in some way. The most common rewards are listed below. We will discuss rewards during the first week of school. The class will also be contributing ideas for rewards as well. Rewards can be earned by the whole class, teams, or individually.
  • (Big Bucks, Blue- Ribbons, student-of-the-week, student-of-the-month, free time, class parties, pencils, erasers, stickers, prize box, Fun Fridays)
  • If it is possible for your family to donate small prizes for our prize box, it would be greatly appreciated.
  • For those times when a student is making poor choices, they will earn negative consequences. The procedure for dealing with those negative choices is listed below. At each level, appropriate choices and social skills will be discussed with your child.
  • First Offense: verbal warning
  • Second Offense: loss of recess with an essay on behavior
  • Third Offense: parent phone call
  • Fourth Offense: office discipline (can include referral notice, intervention with Dean of Students or Principal, alternative learning setting, and in severe instances suspension from school).

Attendance
  • Attendance is directly linked to school success. Make it your family's highest priority to get your child to school every day, on time. If your child needs to be absent, you need to notify the office as early as possible. Please also send a note explaining the reason for the absence with your child on their return. Your child will be responsible for making up work missed.
  • Please also remember that our cooperative learning teams depend on all team members being present. Also, each class in the school is recognized and rewarded for having perfect attendance, and this is very important to our students.
  • Thank you for your support with this!

Homework/ Make-up work
  • Math homework will be assigned everyday, Monday-Friday. On the back of each homework sheet, you will find a "Parent Peek" that will help you assist your child with the assignment. All work has been taught and practiced in class before going home as homework.
  • Reading homework is to read for 20 minutes or more each night and to complete a reading log, Monday-Thursday. This will be checked daily and collected on Fridays by your child's reading teacher.
  • Spelling will also be assigned Monday-Thursday. Spelling tests will be given on Fridays. On some short weeks, spelling will be cancelled.
  • Other homework for other subjects will be given at various times, depending on what is being taught in the classroom. However this will not be on a frequent basis.
  • Students will be required to have a homework folder that they will take home every night. Other important notices will also come home in the folder. You may communicate with me through the folder as well. It is essential that you monitor your child's homework folder with them nightly. In addition to the folder, students will be required to use a daily planner/agenda notebook. One will be provided to each student at the beginning of the year. If it is lost, parents will need to pay for the replacement. Students will list their homework assignments in their planner daily and will record other important information for themselves and their family. Please make sure that you assist and check your child's planner nightly with their folder.
  • Please be sure that homework is turned in on time.
  • Your child will be attending Homework Club during recess to complete any missing work. However, this frequently is not enough time to complete the assignment or to practice the skill satisfactorily.
  • Homework during times of absence must be made up the day following their day of return.

Grading Policy
  • Grades are based on completion of work and effort put forth. Understanding of key concepts must be demonstrated to receive full credit. Grades for Third grade and above are on the traditional letter system.
  • 90-100= A
  • 80-89= B
  • 70-79= C
  • 60-69= D
  • 0-59= F

Climate Plan
  • The climate plan (in the school calendar you received at registration) is where you will find school rules and policies. Please review this plan with your child as well and return both signed portions to school ASAP.

Volunteering
  • Your help in the classroom would be greatly appreciated. This help could include working with students or preparing learning materials or both, whichever you are more comfortable with. We would also appreciate your help with field trips, class parties, and special events. Please Contact me if you are interested in being a volunteer in any capacity.

It is my belief that the success of each student is directly related to the support received from an important team of individuals. This team includes you, myself, and other members of the Lois Allen Elementary School community. You have my commitment to do all that I can to facilitate our student's learning.

Each child at Lois Allen has a personal account set up on Study Island. Go here to work on math and reading skills, play games and learn about the Nevada Academic Standards.
