HISTORICAL TOPIC/ERA: Manifest Destiny and Nevada Statehood

 

GRADE LEVEL(S): 7th

 

TIME REQUIRED: One Week (Five 55 minute class periods)

 

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND:

Throughout the nineteenth century, immigration dominated Nevada, affecting its development and society. The discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1859 was one of the richest gold and silver strikes in the West and led to Nevada's statehood in 1864. In this lesson, students will be able to explore describe the contributions of settlers of Nevada and the West.

STUDENT LEARNING GOALS/OBJECTIVES:

Students will familiarize themselves with Power Point

Students will learn Nevada history from 1840 – 1880 and teach it to their peers

 

MATERIALS/SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS:

·        Computer Lab

·        Power Point

·        Access to www.onlinenevada.org

 

ACTIVITIES/STRATEGIES:

1.      Teacher will model the Power Point activity by showing “Mafia in Vegas” Power Point

2.      Hand out rubric for student Power Points

3.      Divide class into pairs

4.      Assign each pair a topic (See standards for topics)

5.      Instruct students on how to find information on their topic using www.onlinenevada.org

6.      Help students develop their Power Points

7.      Let students present their Power Points to rest of class

 

 

ASSESSMENT:

Students will give an oral Power Point presentation on their subject.  Grades will be assigned according to rubric and guidelines below.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Power Point Assignment

 

Your power point needs to have 5-7 slides with at least 3-5 bullet points on each slide.  You need to have at least 3 pictures in your presentation as well.  The oral presentation needs to be between 5-7 minutes long.
