HISTORICAL TOPIC/ERA:  Anasazi  Life

 

GRADE LEVEL(S):  4th

 

TIME REQUIRED: One 30-minute class in the computer lab, and two 45- minutes class periods.

 

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: The Anasazi people settled in the southern Nevada about 2,000 years ago.  Anasazi is a Native American term that means old or ancient ones.  The Anasazi built a large community known today as Pueblo Grande de Nevada, or the Lost City. The Anasazi created a lasting legacy in rock art images carved or painted on stone surfaces.  Petroglyphs, carved or pecked into stone, are the most common form or rock art remaining in Nevada.

 

NEVADA STANDARDS:

Nevada History Standard 3.4.5 Locate  Nevada’s earliest Native American inhabitants, known as the Desert Archaic people.

Nevada History Standard 2.4.4 Use note taking, outlining, summarizing to organize and understand information from text.

Nevada Writing Standard 5.4.3 Write a narrative or story that moves through a logical sequence of events and includes details to develop the plot, characters, and setting , beginning with familiar subjects and expanding to other areas.

 

 

STUDENT LEARNING GOALS/OBJECTIVES:

Students will identify the writings and language of early native Nevadans.

Students will create a story about early native Nevada inhabitants.

 

MATERIALS/SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS:

1.      Online Nevada Encyclopedia (www.onlinenevada.org)

2.      WCSD 4th grade textbook Nevada Our Home

3.   30 minutes computer lab session

 

 

 

ACTIVITIES/STRATEGIES:

1.      Using the computer lab students will access information on the Anasazi people using the Online Nevada Encyclopedia.

1.      Search www.onlinenevada.org

2.      Select People of Nevada

3.      Select Native American History

4.      Have students select and reading articles on Abandonment of Lost City,

Lost City Archaeology, and Anasazi Rock Art.

5.   Students will take notes on informational text.   

2.      Students will read aloud Lesson 2 The Anasazi pg. 52-55 in Nevada Our Home.

3.      The teacher will facilitate a group discussion of the Anasazi.  Students may refer to notes for discussion.

4.      Students will complete Activity from Nevada Our Home pg. 55
