In 1908, six automobiles, including the only American entry, the Thomas Flyer, embarked on a grueling 22,000-mile race from New York to Paris. The following lesson plans, based on Nevada State Academic Standards, were developed by Washoe County School District teachers to use in conjunction with a visit to the National Automobile Museum (the Harrah Collection) on a field trip. They may also be used in your classroom independent of the Museum's exhibit.

These lessons were written by Geri Garrison, Corrinne Moffat, Trevor Moffat, and Amy Stover.

Passport
--Use the Passport for a guided tour through the auto museum with pre-planned questions and passport stamps for successful completion of each section of the tour. Can be completed independently by 5th through 8th graders and completed with assistance by younger children. Click here to download the answer key for the Passport.

On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!--Designed for 4th through 6th graders. Students create a foldable book, chart a course of one of the cars in the race, and write about their adventures on the race around the world.

Quiet on the Set!--Readers' Theater about the Great Race for elementary students, who can study history while practicing reading and speaking skills.

Man vs. Machine: The Great Automobile Race of 1908--Developed for middle school students, this lesson combines history with geography and economics as students analyze the effect of the great race on the auto industry, analyze primary sources, and map the regions of the the cars traveled.

Great Race PowerPoint--Designed to accompany Man vs. Machine, this can be used for whole class or individual instruction. Details on how to navigate the PowerPoint are included in the Man vs. Machine lesson.
