Lesson Planning Using Film

The TAH Cohorts must complete two lesson plans before Winter Break.  An option for one the Cohort lesson plans is to use film according to the instruction received at our Saturday Dialogue, “Themes of Freedom Through American Film.”  Teachers on the Vertical Team should think about using film in one of the lessons for their unit plan, although this is not required.  All lesson plans are due to Sue Davis at shdavis@washoe.k12.nv.us by December 18, 2009.  Please contact Angela Orr at aorr@washoe.k12.nv.us if you have any questions or would like assistance in your lesson planning.

If you choose to use film in your lesson plans, please be mindful of the following:

  • Review the requirements of the lesson plan rubric. A film may take the place of a primary source document, or be used in addition to a primary source document.
  • Think of film as a historical or primary source.  Students should be actively, rather than passively, engaged in analyzing the source.  A film in school is not an excuse to “lay back and enjoy the show” as one might on a rainy Saturday afternoon.  Instead, movies and movie clips used in history classrooms should provoke some of the highest levels of thinking (analysis, synthesis, and evaluation) in order to serve a curricular purpose.
  • Engage students in the process of asking “Why” questions rather than “What” questions.  Focus on themes and big ideas (essential questions) instead of on storyline.
  • It’s not required of your lesson plan, but analyzing film based on its context and narrative, among other things, is a great introduction to the ideas of historiography.  This allows students to see that history is not a static story.  With new generations of historians (and film makers), events of the past take on new meaning.  The study of history is a continual activity of “sense making” and changing interpretations.
