2010 Summer Institute

The Ways Across the West:
From Trails to Rails to Highways

Institute Description
The goal of the institute is to increase history content knowledge of the participants. Participants will read and discuss up-to-date research and commentary on the subject, and instructors will emphasize practical application of this knowledge. In particular, instructors and participants investigate and discuss innovative approaches and/or materials that relate directly to the state history standards. The atmosphere will be relaxed with discussion and class interaction encouraged at all times. The class will investigate a number of historical materials – primary documents, the work of prominent historians, literature, and a number of audio and visual materials.

Dates

  • May 27 (Thursday) – 3:30-5:30
  • June 13 (Sunday) – 1:00-5:00
  • June 14-18 (Monday-Friday) – 8:30-4:30

  • Desperate Passage: The Donner Party’s Perilous Journey West, Rarick, 2008
  • Using Primary Sources in the Classroom, Shell Education, 2005
  • DVD-American Experience, The Donner Party, 1994
  • Nevada Place Names: A Geographical Dictionary, Carlson, 1974

Note: Readings in Conquests & Consequences (pages 1-253) and Desperate Passages (all)
should be completed before the Institute begins on June 13.
Stipend

  • $1260.00  - Attendance mandatory at ALL scheduled meetings
  • Books, binders, teaching materials, and lunch daily

Assignments/Requirements

  • For stipend
  • For 2 Graduate History Credits
    • 10-15 page research paper
    • Due Dec. 10, 2010 to Prof. Rowley
    • Tuition will be reimbursed once course has been completed.
