Teaching American History Project
  2008-2009
Overview

The northern Nevada Teaching American History Project is a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to the Washoe County School District, in cooperation with an array of groups in the state of Nevada. Grant money is used to create training seminars for secondary school teachers that focus on student achievement through the expansion and advancement of teachers’ knowledge in social studies and U.S. History.

Workshops and seminars reward participants with stipends, credits, or release time, in turn increasing intra-district collaboration, teacher self-esteem, and a sense of professional achievement. A range of activities allows participants to select programs that match their interests, level of commitments, and schedules. All programs feature historical content based on Nevada State standards.

The TAHP teachers make presentations at local, regional, and national conferences; publishing in scholarly journals and even appearing on local public TV broadcasts. The TAHP provides teachers within northern Nevada with content knowledge and the sense of community, pedagogy, and practice needed to become effective teachers of American history.
