Honor Choir - At Caughlin Ranch Elementary, we are very fortunate to have Mrs. Cecilia Higgins as our music teacher. In addition to teaching the WCSD core music curriculum at each grade level (including all special programs like Nevada Day, seasonal programs and Colonial Dancing), Mrs. Higgins conducts Honor Choir for select fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students.
To be a member of the Honor Choir, a student must try out. Try outs are held at the beginning of the school year, and the number of available openings is dependent upon the number of returning choir students. There are physical limitations to the size of the choir: Our risers can only hold so many students; for the 2008-2009 school year there were 99 members of the Honor Choir. Participation is based on excellence in musical performance, citizenship, and consistent attendance.
In addition to trying out, students must be prepared to make a commitment to attend all rehearsals (held from 8:00 AM to 8:40 AM on Tues. and Thurs. at school), with occasional extra rehearsals if more time is required to prepare for a performance.
Potential choir members also need to be available for various performances on weekends and evenings during the year: There are generally several performances around the holidays and at least one in the spring, which is usually combined with a trip to an amusement park. In order to fund the spring trip, students conduct a fundraiser in the fall. Spring also brings the Zone Choir concert, usually held at Reno High. There will also be times when choir students will need to leave their regular classrooms to sing during other programs.
In addition to programs at school, past performances have taken place at the Nevada Humane Society, various Retirement/Nursing homes, on the courthouse steps (for Pinwheels for Prevention), at the Grand Sierra Resort (to help a world choral organization make a decision regarding the location for their meeting), and at various local schools such as Reno High and the Joe Crowley Student Union at UNR.
Our choir uniform consists of a green CRES Honor Choir polo shirt (which will need to be purchased), along with black pants or skirt and dark shoes. Another financial consideration is our one-time accompanist fee.
Honor Choir is dedicated to bringing music to as many people as possible, whether it’s within our school, or out in the greater community. Performances are often given to those who might not otherwise be able to enjoy the beauty of live music, and very often to support local charities.
If your child is interested in Honor Choir, look for information coming home at the beginning of the school year, or talk with Mrs. Higgins.
Service Club is for fourth, fifth and sixth graders who want to organize and implement activities to serve their communities. A few examples of last year's activities include: a food drive and can collection to build a giant Spongebob Squarepants at TMCC then donating the items to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, participation in a clean-up effort of the Truckee River by picking up trash, knitting hats and scarves for needy children, cleaning up the school and park grounds, holding a yard sale and donating the proceeds to the Humane Society, doing a Spring clean-up benefit, collecting books for a book drive, and planting flowers.
This year the Service Club has the following activities planned:
1) The Caughlin Ranch Service Club has been making dream catchers to sell for $1 each. The money we raise will be donated for the Hawken Fire Restoration fund. The dream catchers will be sold on Fridays at Student Store. 2) Service Club will be placing paper bags on door steps throughout the neighborhood on Dec. 5 to collect canned and dry foods for Northern Nevada Food Bank. We will be collecting the filled bags on Dec. 12. 3) Service Club members have also volunteered at the Northern Nevada Food Bank. 4) We plan on holding a book drive in February.
Meetings will be held every Wednesday from 3:15 to 3:45 in room D1.
Spanish Classes offered by Community Education and Northern Nevada International Center. These classes are open to kids in grades 1-6 and are held after school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:10 - 3:55 pm at Caughlin Ranch. For more information, please call 353-5780.
The Student Store is organized by parent volunteers from Mrs. Winter's and Miss McGhie's fourth grade classes. The students sell the latest toys, games and school supplies to raise money that will be donated to community causes of their choice. Over the last 7 years the student store has raised close to $30,000 and has made contributions to The Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Children's Cabinet, SPCA, and Make a Wish Foundation to name a few. The goal of this project is to provide students with the opportunity to prepare, lead and evaluate the success of their service experience. Through the children's work, almost 400 students have received Presidential Service Awards.
Cub Scout Pack 10 is open to all 1st through 6th grade boys and their parents. Meetings are held Thursdays at 7:00 pm in the CRES Multipurpose Room. For more information, please contact John Slaughter at 829-0713 or Bill Waits at 787-1111.
Brownie Girl Scout Troop 735 is open to all 2nd grade girls. We meet once a month on Tuesdays from 4:45 - 6:00 PM. For more information please contact Kelly Biggs at 826-1803 or thebiggs@sbcglobal.net. Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada serves approximately 6,700 girls in the Washoe County School District and other outlying areas in Northern Nevada and eastern California. Our mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. It would not be possible without the dedication of our 1,700 adult volunteers and still more help is always needed. Of our 64 Washoe County elementary schools alone, many of those do not have the parental involvement required to start a troop for the girls at that school who want to be Girl Scouts. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or troop leader, or your daughter or someone is interested, please contact Carol Merideth, membership specialist at 775-322-0642 or cmerideth@gssn.org.
Young Rembrandts drawing classes are offered Tuesdays at Caughlin Ranch Elementary in the library from 3:10 to 4:10 pm. Visit www.youngrembrandts.com/nevada for more information or call (877) 580-4069.
