Hug Senior Sees Life without Boundaries Through Art
Student: Carlos Kovac
School: Hug High School
Carlos Kovac, a senior at Hug High School, likes to dig into subjects that most people would shy away from in conversation and perhaps even in thought. To him, examining stereotypes through art is one way of breaking through some barriers he feels don’t need to exist.
“Everything I’ve been through – poverty – everything that I’ve experienced has inspired me to tell stories through my art,” Carlos said. “I want people to know it’s okay to go through those things and it’s okay to talk about them instead of hiding them.”
Carlos, who’s known for his artistic talents, graduates this week with honors as he looks forward to keep developing his interests in art, music and business.
Carlos’ counselor, Colleen Walker, called him the “total package” among students.
“He’s artistic, he’s smart and does well with computers and sculptures,” she said. “He acts. He’s talented. He’s just an outstanding young man.”
She said coming into Hug as a freshman, the teen was shy, but that changed throughout his four-year tenure at the school.
“He’s come out of his shell,” she said. “He exudes confidence.”
Carlos said he wants to combine business with art when he graduates from high school and college. He has a scholarship and will attend San Diego State University in the fall, where he plans to major in business and take a few art classes.
“Being an artist, it’s not something that’s really stable,” he said of pursuing art alone. “I want to have a back-up plan. I also do music. There are so many things I want to do and I really want to combine all those things.”
He’s won several honors through the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, including three silver medals and one gold medal. He also was nominated through art organization American Vision for his sculptures.
Carlos said his greatest lesson in high school was perseverance.
“I would say don’t ever give up,” he said. “It’s really the truth. There are always going to be people doubting you. You can’t let those people get to you. You’re the only person stopping yourself from achieving your goals.”
