Smarthinking Getting Big Response

October 23, 2008

SMARTHINKING.com online tutoring service is being well-received by students (7th through 12th grade) looking for extra help in their studies.

For the beginning of the school year (August 25) until October 17, there have been 2071 new
registrations for the service.  A total of 220 sessions have been held, totaling 984 hours of
instruction time. The subject areas getting the most usage are:

Algebra (636)

Essay Center (427)

Geometry & Trigonometry (262)

Career Writing (207).

SMARTHINKING.com offers free tutoring in math, science and language arts with a specially- trained professional. It can be utilized by all students, ranging from those who are credit deficient to those who are academically talented, and including second language learners.

"When we made SMARTHINKING.com available, we had expectations that students and our teachers would embrace it as a valuable resource," said Paul Dugan, Washoe County School District Superintendent. "We are gratified to see that those expectations have been exceeded in an im-
pressive way.  And we're confident that usage will rise as students, parents, and teachers
see its value."

Mr. Dugan said that SMARTHINKING will play a major role in helping students succeed in meeting the district's number one goals: which are staying in school and graduating with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in either college or the world of work.

The implementation of SMARTHINKING online tutoring and academic support is designed to increase student achievement, enhance learning and ultimately improve the graduation rate in Washoe County, which is currently at 75 percent. The Terry Lee Wells Foundation awarded the Education Collaborative of Washoe County a three-year grant totaling $250,000 to implement SMARTHINKING.com. As a result of the gift, students and their teachers and parents can access e-structor-reg- certified tutors anytime, from any Internet connection.

"SMARTHINKING's research-proven online tutoring lets students get help at the moment of need - whether that's 10 in the morning or 10 at night," said Burck Smith, CEO and co-founder. "The ‘teachable moment' is when a student is frustrated with their homework, not several hours or days later."

The implementation of SMARTHINKING.com in Washoe County represents a new collaboration with the Terry Wells Foundation, Education Collaborative and Washoe County School District, Truckee Meadows Community College, Nevada System of Higher Education, University of Nevada, Reno, and the Washoe Education Association
