Winter Sports Wrap Up Districtwide

Reno, NV (March 3, 2011) - Winter sports proved to be extremely successful for many Washoe County School District student athletes as they made a great showing at state tournaments.

In basketball, the Incline High School boys, Sparks High School boys and the Reed Lady Raiders made it to the state tournament in their respective divisions. The Incline Highlanders were the state runner-up in the 2A division.

The student competitive skiers did great on the slopes. The Reno High School girls team took home first place in the combined competition, followed by Galena, McQueen and Wooster. For the boys skiing championship, Galena placed first, Wooster second and Reno third.

On the wrestling mats, McQueen finished in a tie for third out of the 38 teams that qualified for the state tournament. The Lancers also tied for first in the regional championships along with the Spanish Springs High School Cougars. The Reed Raiders finished in sixth place with two individual champions this season. Reno finished in a tie for eighth place with one individual champion. Sparks Railroaders finished in 10th place and the Highlanders from Incline High School finished in eighth place.

Ken Cass, coordinator of athletics and activities for the District, says he is proud of the students and staff. "Our coaches and student athletes worked very hard throughout the season and as a result, we were very well represented. It was a great winter sports season for WCSD.
