WCSD Finance Department Earns Tenth Consecutive Award

Reno, NV (April 12, 2011) - The Washoe County School District marks a decade of surpassing minimum financial reporting requirements from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). The District's Business and Finance Department once again has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the GFOA. The Certificate is the GFOA's highest form of recognition for governmental accounting and financial reporting.

Board President Barbara McLaury said she was pleased with the District's continuing accolades in its accounting practices. "I think it's excellent and that it reflects greatly on Chief Financial Officer Gary Kraemer," McLaury said. "I think it actually demonstrates that we are good stewards of all taxpayer funds as revealed through the selection of the WCSD for this award."

Superintendent Heath Morrison commended the Business and Finance Department for successfully going above and beyond with its oversight of the District's financial resources. "Maintaining the highest level of fiscal responsibility with taxpayer money is extremely important to us," Morrison said. "This award once again demonstrates our commitment to providing the best possible education to our children while upholding our promise of transparency and accountability."

In accepting the certificate on behalf of the Finance Department and the District, Kraemer said the staff of the Business and Finance Department continues to prove its outstanding fiscal management. "The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees, District management and our financial staff take pride in receiving this prestigious award again from the GFOA," Kraemer said. "The fact that we have been recognized 10 years in a row says a great deal about the professionalism of all of the people who work in this critical area of WCSD's operation. We are dedicated to excellence and the commitment to monitor the taxpayers' money wisely."

The GFOA established the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program in 1945 to encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.

Reports submitted to the awards program are reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and the GFOA Special Review Committee (SRC), which comprises individuals with expertise in public-sector financial reporting and includes financial statement preparers, independent auditors, academics and other financial experts.
