District Counts Down to Graduation

Reno, NV (May 10, 2011) - The clock is running! The Washoe County School District prepares for celebration today with exactly four weeks left until the first high school graduation ceremony takes place on June 7. In anticipation of marking the achievements of the Class of 2011 graduates, the District will highlight dozens of amazing stories of success and triumphs of a few seniors from each Washoe County high school.

"Graduation is the culmination of a young person's time in public education," said Superintendent Heath Morrison. "It's also an opportunity to celebrate their hard work and their ability to take that diploma and go on to do things they've dreamed about doing. It should be a night focused on the kids and to celebrate their success."

As part of the Countdown to Graduation campaign, a new story will be posted every weekday between May 10 and June 7 on the WCSD website, www.washoecountyschools.org. Community members will find an actual timer counting down to the first graduation ceremony on June 7 as well as a link to the Web page with dozens of profiles. Each weekday, students, staff, parents and community members are invited to read a profile of a senior who will be receiving his or her diploma in June.

More than 30 stories will cover a gamut of seniors with various life and academic experiences, from those who have overcome physical or emotional challenges to achieve in school to those who plan to attend college or start their career after completing their high school studies. Stories will also have an accompanying photo of the student.

As the District strives to help "every child, by name and face, to graduation," WCSD Board of Trustees President Barbara McLaury said ensuring each student's success is the top priority in the District's mission.

"Watching our students walk that stage after all their hard work and determination is the pinnacle of our mission to prepare them for adulthood, whether their path lies in continuing their studies in college or moving into a highly-skilled career," McLaury said. "For these young people and for those educators who have poured their lives into them, this is one of the most important steps they'll take into the next part of their lives."
