Four WCSD College-Sponsored National Merit Scholars Named

Reno, NV (June 1, 2011) - Four Washoe County students are the recipients of the prestigious college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship for 2011. These exceptional scholars represent the top 1 percent of students in Nevada and were chosen from 16,000 semifinalists in the nation.

The WCSD winners include:
  • Lisa Bryant, Reno High School, who will attend the University of Nevada, Reno
  • Brin Smith, Wooster High School, who will attend the University of Arizona
  • Michelle Duggan, Spanish Springs High School, who will attend the University of Nevada, Reno
  • Steven Strozza, Spanish Springs High School, who will attend the University of Southern California
"We are very proud of these students' success," said Superintendent Heath Morrison. "These scholarships are proof of their hard work in the classroom. We expect great things from them as they prepare to embark upon the next chapter in their lives after graduation."

More than 2,900 winners of college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships will be able to attend their institution of choice. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 each year for up to four years of undergraduate work at the college or university at which the student will attend. In 2011, 198 higher education institutions are sponsoring these awards through the National Merit Scholarship program.

Approximately 1.5 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools were entered in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship program when they took the 2009 Preliminary Scholarship Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. During fall 2010, 16,000 semifinalists were named for scoring the highest among entrants in each state, representing less than 1 percent of a state's seniors. Semifinalists were required to submit a scholarship application with an outstanding academic record, the endorsement of a school official and SAT scores that confirmed test performance. The entrants also submitted an essay and information about extracurricular activities, awards and leadership positions.

Two other types of National Merit Scholarships were announced this spring.
