Superintendent Receives Successful Evaluation from WCSD Board

Reno, NV (June 20, 2011) - Washoe County School District Superintendent Heath Morrison received an outstanding evaluation from the Board of Trustees during their meeting on June 14, being commended for his leadership in executing and achieving the goals set forth in the District's strategic plan and for his strong efforts in engaging and collaborating with the community for support of K-12 education.

Morrison approaches the end of his second year with WCSD, having joined the District in August 2009. New to the evaluation process this year is its alignment to the results-driven Envision WCSD 2015 - Investing In Our Future, the District's strategic plan developed in 2010. The process involved a new evaluation rubric to assess Morrison in instructional and organizational leadership within the District; management skills; parent and community outreach and communication; personal and professional ethics and board relations.

The extraordinary leadership of our superintendent, Dr. Heath Morrison, in establishing a new vision, mission and core beliefs for Washoe County School District is creating an educational environment throughout the District that will reap great benefits for all of our students and families for years to come," said WCSD Board President Barbara McLaury. "We are fortunate to have Dr. Morrison as an advocate for our schools, community and state."

When the Board of Trustees set out to hire a new superintendent in 2009, it established an aggressive reform agenda for which it sought a leader who could advocate for education at a greater level than in the past. Ken Grein, Vice President of the Board, said the selection of Morrison launched the District in the right direction.

He's embraced every part of the community - students, staff, business people and community leaders," Grein said. "He's reached out to every part of this community in a way that's never been done before. The feedback on Dr. Morrison has been absolutely superb. When we brought him on board, we made a great decision."

The business community and other stakeholders in the Reno-Sparks area have received Morrison's leadership and objectives for Washoe County School District with positive support and enthusiasm for his direction. Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce interim CEO Fred Boyd said the Board's assessment of Morrison was accurate. He applauded Morrison's commitment to consistent messaging and community outreach, which has resulted in broad-based backing of education among businesses, elected officials, non-profits and community organizations.

Heath's exemplary evaluation by the WCSD Board of Trustees is well-deserved," Boyd said. "The Chamber and many of us in the community have been working with Dr. Morrison since his first day on the job. He is an exceptional leader and communicator. He is able to move people in the direction of true academic reform. With his efforts and those of his staff as well as a commitment from the entire community, we can collectively make a difference for every child."

The evaluation attributes the change of culture within the District and the Reno-Sparks community to Morrison's high expectations of excellence and respect to and among employees, a high level of enthusiasm and his comprehensive knowledge of the District's functions and operations. It also commends Morrison for keeping students at the forefront of the District's mission.
