Anderson Elementary School Opens Monday
After Complete School Revitalization
What: Monday is "Back to School" day at Anderson Elementary School, which has undergone a complete school revitalization using voter-approved funds from the 2002 Rollover Bond. Children will be entering brand new classrooms featuring interactive white boards, new flooring, cabinets, furniture, new energy-efficient windows with internal blinds, fresh paint and more. The entire school now benefits from enhanced safety/security features as well, including new internal locks, perimeter fencing and single-point-of-entry access. This revitalization creates an improved, more energy efficient and safer learning environment.
When: Monday, August 1; school begins at 8:45 a.m. (recommended arrival at 8:25 a.m.)
Where: 1055 Berrum Lane, Reno
Why: News outlets can capture student reactions to their completely revitalized classrooms. Teachers and the school's principal, Debbie O'Gorman, will also be available, as will Mark Stanton, Chief Capital Projects Officer.
Editors' notes:
- Anderson Elementary School was built in 1955; more than one quarter of all Washoe County School District sites are more than 50 years old, with almost 60 percent over three decades old.
- The funding for revitalization work comes from a capital projects account, which is money exclusively raised from voter-approved bond measures. It cannot be used to pay teacher salaries or offset general fund shortfalls.
- This project was part of a $31.5 million roster of summer/fall renovation, improvement projects and school revitalizations aimed at improving classroom learning environments, making local schools safer and upgrading older schools.
- Based on a federal standard and statistics from previous seasons, this summer has been estimated to provide employment opportunities for approximately 340 local workers.
