School District Receives National Award

Reno, NV (Aug. 17, 2011) - Books, pencils, papers and computers are all necessary tools for the classroom used by students every day. But how do they get to the classroom? The process starts with the Purchasing staff at WCSD. The Purchasing Department is responsible for buying all goods and services for the District, and for the thirteenth year it's being recognized by the National Purchasing Institute (NPI) with top honors.

The National Purchasing Institute presented the annual Achievement of Excellence in Procurement (AEP) Award for 2011 to the District for the outstanding efforts of the Purchasing staff. The award is given to organizations that demonstrate excellence in procurement by getting a high score on a rating of standardized criteria. The program measures innovation, professionalism, e-purchasing and leadership qualities of an organization.

"Applying for the AEP award," says WCSD Chief Financial Officer Gary Kraemer, "gives the District an opportunity to compete against other organizations on a national level." He adds that being on the receiving end of the award again this year is something he's extremely proud of.

WCSD is one of only six Nevada government agencies to win this award. Only seventeen school districts nationwide have earned the Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award. This is the fourteenth consecutive year that the National Purchasing Institute has recognized Washoe County School District for outstanding practices.

The District's Purchasing Supervisor, Andrea Sullivan, says she is proud of winning the AEP award again this year because it demonstrates how her team continues to implement best practices in government procurement. "In our department, everything that a student needs to achieve comes through us; library books, desks, SMART Boards, even musical instruments. It validates that we are being good stewards of the taxpayers' money while helping students achieve at their fullest potential."

The National Purchasing Institute is about education and networking for its members and other professionals associated with public sector procurement and supply management. NPI is the Official Public Sector Purchasing Affiliate of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM).
