Eighteen WCSD Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists
Reno, NV (Sept. 19, 2011) - Eighteen students from seven Washoe County School District high schools are being recognized as semifinalists in the competitive National Merit Scholarship Program.
The National Merit Scholarship Program named approximately 16,000 semifinalists for the 2012 awards. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million that will be offered next spring.
To be considered for a scholarship, the semifinalists must advance to the finalist round by meeting several requirements including having an outstanding academic record throughout high school, being endorsed by the high school principal, and earning SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the test that qualified them as semifinalists. Approximately 15,000 semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level. Merit Scholar winners will be selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
The winners of the 2012 National Merit Scholarships will be announced in the spring.
