WCSD Asks for Input on Proposed Changes to the School Year Calendar
Reno, NV (Jan. 13, 2012) - After more than 40 community meetings on the proposed changes to the school calendar beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, the Washoe County School District is taking the next step to gather input from parents, community members and school district staff through a comprehensive survey.
The survey, which is available in both English and Spanish on the WCSD website, is focused on gathering feedback about the proposed balanced calendar. The calendar changes could add a possible three weeks for intersession breaks that can be used for student learning time during the school year. Depending on the needs of students, intersessions could include acceleration, remediation or enrichment classes to help students gain credits and augment their education with additional courses.
WCSD Senior Director Bryn Lapenta, who is the project manager for the proposed calendar, said the community meetings provided valuable insight about this topic. "We are looking forward to getting additional feedback through this survey before we present our recommendation to the Board of Trustees. The balanced calendar has received a lot of support from everyone involved as it will help all students achieve at higher academic levels. Until every single one of our students graduates from high school, we need to continue looking at different options that will provide them with support to reach their dreams. The balanced calendar is one of those opportunities."
The calendar survey will available through Jan. 25 and can be accessed at
