Washoe County School District and Sierra Arts Foundation Selected for
Arts Education Training in Washington, D.C.
Arts Education Training in Washington, D.C.
Reno, NV (Feb. 21, 2012) - The Washoe County School District and the Sierra Arts Foundation are among 12 teams nationwide chosen to attend the Kennedy Center Partners in Education Institute in Washington, D.C. in April. The Institute promotes partnerships between arts organizations and local schools, focusing on the development of education programs for teachers.
"The opportunity to partner with the Kennedy Center creates the bridge needed to sustain the investment by the Department of Education's Professional Development grant in the Washoe County School District," said Stacey Spain, Interim Executive Director of the Sierra Arts Foundation. "This gives us the ability to transition from grant-funded programming to a credit-based model. Sierra Arts Foundation's Kennedy Center-trained teaching artists are delighted to continue their work with Washoe County School District's educators."
"We are very excited about the news of the Kennedy Center Partnership, as this will allow our school district to continue the great work we have done with our Arts Infusion project," said David Branson, Fine Arts Coordinator for the Washoe County School District. "The six schools currently involved have given us great feedback on the positive effects on our classroom teachers' instruction, and great gains in student engagement and learning."
At the Institute, which is part of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, teams will see a variety of professional development programs in progress for teachers, and will explore methods for planning, implementing and evaluating similar events to promote the performing arts in the classroom. Teams will receive planning guides and will meet with national education leaders and guest artists while at the Kennedy Center.
One representative from the Sierra Arts Foundation and one representative from the Washoe County School District will attend the training session from April 25-28. All costs for the training will be covered by The Kennedy Center Partners in Education Foundation and the Sierra Arts Foundation.
