Junior Naval ROTC

The Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Program is designed to offer a learning experience, which will contribute to the molding of responsible American citizens who are qualified for productive civilian or military careers. The Navy program is offered at Damonte Ranch High School as an alternative track to earn a PE and health credit.

Naval Science is the elective academic position of NJROTC and is a four-year sequential program offered in sequence from year to year. Within Washoe County School District Naval Science/NJROTC and HSROTC is divided by semester. For each successfully completed semester a student will earn one half (1/2) credits toward the full course of NS-1, NS-2, NS-3, or NS-4. The complete Naval Science course is Naval Science 1-4 divided by semester so that NS 1-2 would constitute a full course of NS-1, and NS 3-4 would constitute a full course of instruction for NS-2 etc. Cadets must successfully complete Naval Science 1 (NS-1) prior to being accepted into NS-2. Cadets who successfully complete NS-2 must get permission from the Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI) for acceptance to NS-3 (advanced Leadership). Cadets who successfully complete NS-3 and are promoted to 1st Class Petty Officer (C/PO1) must also get permission from the SNSI for acceptance in NS-4.

NJROTC SPECIALTY TEAMS (Optional)

This class is for members of the NROTC specialty teams. It should be a pass or fail just as the athletes would get for participation on any sports team. Specialty teams, which would qualify for this credit, would be Armed Drill Team, Unarmed Drill Team, Color Guard, Marksmanship Team, Physical Fitness Team, and the Academic Team. When not participating on a team, during seasons, the students will be either working on other class projects or homework.

Sometimes a cadet will not be able to schedule their last one or two years in NJROTC because of class conflicts. The above classes, which would hopefully be offered, would help to alleviate some of these problems. In order to attend these classes for those reasons the SNSI and counselors must agree that this would be beneficial for the student and graduation.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

  1. The NJROTC program can be very competitive in many different extra-curricular activities. These include specialty teams; Academic Team, Color Guard Teams, Armed Drill Team (Military Close-order drill with weapons), Unarmed Drill Team (Military Close-order drill without weapons), Orienteering Team, Physical Fitness Team, and Marksmanship Team. The only team that is required by the CNET is Color Guard, however to get more cadets involved these other teams are a necessity. Most of the competitions are postal; we do the competition at our home school and sent the results to a judging school. However, there are many opportunities for the teams to compete within other parts of the district, state, area and nationally. Belonging to these teams, cadets can earn ribbons, medals, and trophies and possible scholarships.
  2. Other activities that the NJROTC participates in are community service projects, local parades and other events that the community may request. These activities may also be intra-curricular events and are then graded events.
  3. JROTC sanctioned activities include WCSD military ball with other JROTC units in the area, a Annual Military Inspection (AMI), dances for the unit, a formal Navy Ball, Navy Leadership Camp, held either in Seattle or San Diego, and WCSD JROTC Leadership Camp.
