Funding for capital projects is a critical issue in the Washoe County School District and one of the district's highest priorities during the 2013 Nevada Legislative Session. WCSD has invested in its school buildings in the last ten years. However, the District's only major source of funding (the 2002 rollover bond) expired in November 2012, leaving WCSD with no way to continue to maintain and repair its school buildings.

The Nevada Legislature is considering a proposal that would provide a sustainable source of capital funding to WCSD. Assembly Bill 46 (AB 46) proposes to increase sales tax by 1/4 percent and property tax by $0.05 in Washoe County. According to UNR's Center for Regional Studies, this would cost the average family an estimated $8 per month. While this would not take care of all of the capital needs our schools are facing, the proposal would raise approximately $20 million annually for WCSD to use on the most critical projects that ensure our schools are operational (such as repairing and replacing necessary equipment like the heating and ventilation systems, plumbing, and roofing).

Visit http://washoecountyschools.org/community/legislative-session/capital_funding for much more information about the capital needs of our schools and the funding proposal.
