Washoe County School District Begins Summer Work
Projects total $33.5 million, employ 450 local workers
Reno, Nev., (May 3, 2010) - - Capital Projects recently kicked off another aggressive roster of repair/improvement projects and school revitalizations directly aimed at improving classroom learning environments, making local schools safer and upgrading older schools.
An estimated $33.5 million — allocated through the 2002 rollover bond and making use of federal dollars from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act — will fund more than 100 summer projects. Based on employment statistics from last summer’s round of projects, this summer will provide employment opportunities for more than 450 local workers.
“We are committed to giving every Washoe County School District student and teacher the best learning environment possible,” said Mark Stanton, chief Capital Projects and Facilities Management officer. “To that end, we are undertaking many projects this summer that will make schools and classrooms better, safer and students and teachers happier.”
The projects range from the installation of Computer-Based Instruction labs at some area schools to heating and cooling upgrades designed to improve student and teacher environmental comfort. Project managers in Capital Projects establish summer work timelines in order to accommodate seasonal breaks and off-track schedules.
“Thanks to taxpayer investment in our children and in our schools, we’re able to undertake a wide range of projects that are all aimed at giving our students the best possible academic environment,” said Elizabeth Wright, director of accountability and public relations for Capital Projects.
