$chool Works
A $92 million investment in our kids, our community, our future

The final hours of the 2011 Legislative session saw passage of a jobs bill that freed up additional bonding capacity for the Washoe County School District. As a result, the Capital Projects division of the WCSD is excited to announce a $92 million Rollover Bond funded School Works program, which will be used to revitalize older schools, upgrade learning environments and make our schools safer.
School Works overview:
- The program includes 337 projects spanning approximately 2.5 years.
- 95 percent of our students will see improvements at their schools.
- All but seven of our schools (92%) will be impacted by School Works — and of those seven schools, all have been recently revitalized.
The goals of School Works:
- to maintain our commitment to the voters through the 2002 Rollover Bond ballot measure by improving older learning environments;
- to benefit the greatest number of students and schools;
- to identify projects that could be started quickly to help stimulate the local economy (based on estimates, School Works will create almost 1,000 construction jobs in our community).
The $92 million School Works Program is projected to include:
- Elementary school revitalizations
- Middle school and high school revitalizations (window replacements)
- Capital renewal (HVAC, roof, flooring and fire alarm replacements)
- Safety and security upgrades
- ADA upgrades
- Internet connectivity improvements
Please keep in mind School Works funding comes from a capital projects account, which is money exclusively raised from voter-approved bond measures; because of the funding source, it cannot be used to pay teacher salaries or offset general fund shortfalls.
