 The Washoe County School Police Explorer program is open to all High School students registered in Washoe County School District. Students in the Explorer program can learn about Law Enforcement and earn high school credit at the same time. The School Police Explorers meet on Monday nights at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) at 6:00 p.m. At the end of each semester students that complete the requirements will receive ½ credit from the supplemental credit office. Some topics include History of Law Enforcement, Case Law, Traffic Stops, Building Searches, and Drug Laws. Students are also given opportunities to work with other local agencies during each semester as part of their community service hours. All students are also eligible to complete a ride-a-long program as Police Explorers. Students also must complete 35 community service hours each semester. Requirements for Enrollment

  • Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA prior to enrollment.
  • Students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA while in the class.
  • Students must also have a clean criminal record.
  • Students may have no more than two unexcused absences per semester to pass.
  • Students must complete 35 hours of community service per semester.
  • Arrests while enrolled in the class will result in removal.
  • Chronic discipline problems at school are also grounds for removal.

 

Community Service: 

Feeding the Homeless

On November 23 2010, 30 Police Explorers assisted the Silver Legacy in serving a holiday meal to hundreds of needy downtown Reno residents.  Feeding the Homeless in an annual event that the Police Explorers work as a part of their community service requirement.

 

 

Run for Education

On October 17th 2010, the Explorer Program assisted with the Run for Education at Damonte Ranch High School.  The Explorers assisted with the many activities that took place at the event.  The Explorers also were in charge of the lost and found, and distrubuted over 180 child ID cards.  

  
 

Reno5000 Halloween Race

 

On 10-29-2010, and 10-30-2010 The Police Explorers assisted with the Reno5000 Halloween race at RC Willey.  The procedes from the race benefit the Washoe County School District.  Explorers assisted in working in food booths, making child ID's and assisting racers out on the course.

 

Adopt a Family

Our Explorers also adopted six families during the 2010 holiday season to assist them with providing holiday meals and gifts for their families.  The Explorers are responsible for getting donations, and delivering the gifts and the meals to the families in need.

Application & Forms:

Due to the large number of applicants, and for students to finalize their schedule for next year the final day to apply for the 2011-2012 school year will be 05-14-12.  Priority will be given to Juniors and Seniors, and returning students as we have a substantial amount of applicants.  A limit of 25 students will be accepted into the class.

On November 15th 2004, Jessica and Cassandra Welch lost their lives in a tragic car accident.  Jessica was a senior at Spanish Springs High School, at the time of the accident.  Jessica was very involved in athletics and was in the process of earning her honors diploma.  Along with being an excellent student athlete, Jessica was also involved in the Police Explorer Program.  In her time in the Explorer Program, Jessica took part in countless hours of community service including helping train academy cadets in the Police Academy.

Cassandra was was also an outstanding student athlete, maintaning high grades and participating in both the volleyball, and basketball teams.  Cassandra was also involved in several school activities, and organizations including yearbook staff.  Cassandra lead by example and was always able to make people smile.

Two Scholarships will be awarded in Jessica, and Cassandra's name.  One of the scholarships is open to all Spanish Springs High School students involved in athletics.  The second is open to all seniors enrolled in the Explorer Program regardless of school attending.  Students must meet the following qualifications:

Students must be graduating seniors who have applied to a two or four year college, and will be enrolled as a full time student.  Students must have maintained a 2.75 GPA or higher while in school.  Students must also show participation in civic contribution/community service. 

The 2011 recipient of the Welch Scholarship is Nicklaus Hans Baron von Nolde.
