WCSDPD Motor Unit/Safe Routes to School

In the Fall of 2006, the Washoe County School District Police Department demonstrated its commitment to safer roadways/school zones by adding a Motor Unit to patrol. The Motor Unit is comprised of one Sergeant and two Officers. Chief Mieras determined that a motor unit was necessary to assist patrol with school zone related traffic issues.  The Motor Unit conducts high visibilty patrols in the school zones, enforcing traffic related laws, protecting our students as they go to and from school.  The Motor Unit also investigates traffic accidents involving School District vehicles, and property.

Safe Routes to School

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs are sustained efforts by parents, schools, community leaders, and local, state, and federal governements to improve the health and well-being of children by enabling and encouraging them to walk and bicycle to school.

SRTS programs examine conditions around schools and conduct projects and activities that work to improve safety and reduce traffic and air pollution in the vacinity of the schools.  As a result, these programs help make bicycling and walking to school safer and more apealing transportation choices thus encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age.
