Definition:
Assistive Technology (AT) equipment, whether low-tech or high-tech, is provided to allow a child to complete a task he/she would not have otherwise been able to complete. Assistive Technology devices and services are provided when determined to be educationally necessary for a child to receive a Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE).
Eligibility:
Any student with an IEP is eligible for Assistive Technology. However, students must have a problem that technology could solve.
Assessment/AT Consideration:
There is no AT test. The WCSD AT team helps IEP teams make decisions about AT based on the problem the student has, goals, classroom expectations, and the student's functional capabilities. Materials and resources are provided through the team to address student needs.
Attention! New Procedure:
The Assistive Technology team now requires a student's IEP be revised to reflect a program change (write "AT referral) under "Other" on the Related Services page with the date the packet will be completed and sent to AT.
To refer a student:
Please contact the AT office for a referral packet by either calling in (333-5036) or emailing (mwheeler@washoe.k12.nv.us) the following information: the student's name, grade, school, special education case manager, and the concerns you have (communication, writing, spelling, written expression, organization, reading, educational participation, etc.) The AT team will send the necessary referral paperwork that relates to the problem the student is having accessing his/her education. After the paperwork is submitted with a copy of the IEP, the AT team will contact the case manager to set up an initial consultation.
