Curriculum & Instruction
Our curriculum is modern and progressive. The district's Center for Teaching and Learning helps teachers maximize effective instruction. Special elements in our instructional program include: Federal Title I Program, English As a Second Language, Nursing, Guidance & Counseling, Washoe High School (alternative education), Occupational Education, Special Education, Gifted & Talented, International Baccalaureate, Opportunity School, Truckee Meadows Community College High School and the Academy of Arts, Careers & Technology.
The State of Nevada requires testing at grades four, eight and 10. The Washoe County School District tests grades three through eight and grade 10.
Students in Nevada must pass the High School Proficiency Examinations in reading, writing and mathematics to receive a high school diploma. Passage rates for the Class of 2009 were 99.4% in reading, 98.8% in writing and 95.1% in math.
Our high school seniors continue to perform better than the state and national averages on the American College Test (ACT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

State Law mandates a 16:1 class size ratio in first and second grades. Third grade has a 19:1 ratio. In grades four through 12 the average class size is 26.5:1.
