Positive Behavior Support PBS! Positive Behavior Support is here.. This program is meant to encourage appropriate and responsible behavior in the various settings of the school. SCHOOL-WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT (SWPBIS) Positive Behavior Support, or PBIS, is a system developed to encourage appropriate and responsible behavior by students. It strives to promote conscientious and suitable actions by staff and student by rewarding these rather than by giving negative consequences. In order for this program to be effective, the PBS team will teach and model the behavioral expectations. Over time, these will become second nature and should help to reduce problem behaviors by establishing quick and efficient responses when problem behaviors occur. Galena High School is just one of the many schools implementing some of the best evidence-based practices in order to improve student performance, academically and behaviorally. I have listed several links below which will help you learn more about what SWPIS is: School Wide Positive Behavior Support. Please take time to familiarize yourself with this program and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. We are always looking for support for this system. If you can donate items to our student store or to the PBIS system, please contact one of the team's members. We are looking for items such as gift cards, t-shirts, food coupons, cash, etc. We thank you in advance for your support. This Tier Two and Tier Three intervention helps students and staff create meaningful relationships which encourage students to be punctual and responsible. The Galena PBS team members went through this training last year and we are now working to identify those students who might benefit from this type of intervention. Building relationships between students and adult staff members can positively impact students who seek more attention than the normal classroom interaction provides. Again, please look for more information on this page and in the monthly Grizz Growl under the Dean’s page as we move forward with the implementation of the SWPBIS program. Michele Parks Dean of Students PBS- CHECK IN CHECK OUT- CICO During the fourth and last quarter of last year, we implemented a new Check in Check out program with a few students. If your son or daughter was recommended for this program, he or she was assigned to a staff member. Then, he or she was required to check in with that person each day before school and pick up his/her daily form. Then, at the end of each period, the staff member checked the Yes or No box under each column heading and signed the sheet. At the end of the day, a check out was done with the same staff member as the morning check in. Each student had a contract that was suited to him/her. At the end of the contract time, he/she could earn Grizz Bucks or other rewards. We will continue with this program this tear where needed. Please support your child by encouraging his/her participation in this program in order to be more successful in school. Thank you for your support. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Parks, Dean of Students at 851-5630 extension 30505. |
