How to talk to children about art
Description of SPECTRA Art volunteer handout
What is Spectra Art?
Spectra is an acronym for – Special Teacher Resources for Art, a program that began in 1980 in the Palo Alto Unified School District in California. Hunsberger PTA purchased this art program which guides volunteers in teaching art in the classroom.
Each grade has a book of lessons. The lessons are self-explanatory and guide you in teaching a project. Additionally, there are other project idea books to complement the lesson. All of these books are located in the library. We only have one set of books so they cannot be checked out. Please review the books in the library, and feel free to make copies of the projects you are interested in completing.
Do I need to have art experience to teach lessons?
NO, the lessons are self-explanatory. No special artistic talent or art knowledge is required, only your time and effort.
How often and when do I teach lessons?
Each teacher will set the time and day that works for their classroom - generally, it is every other week. The group of volunteers for each classroom may set the method of organizing the lessons as works best for them.
What about art supplies?
The supplies are in the Spectra Supply Room at the beginning of “D” hall. The majority of the Spectra projects supplies are in the room. However, if your project requires particular supplies that we do not currently have, contact the Spectra Chairperson (Christine 826-7646, camkierco@yahoo.com).
Who pays for the supplies?
PTA pays for the supplies. Additional funds are made by a Silent Auction at the end of the year Fine Arts Night.
What is Fine Arts Night?
Towards the end of the year we hold this event to showcase our children’s artwork. In addition to our children’s artwork being displayed we also had the Drama Club’s play, Galena High School’s Chamber ensemble as well as the Silent Auction. It is a wonderful way to end our art year.
Thank you for volunteering!
Without your time and effort our children would not have art in the classroom this year.
