Interesting Information about Kate Smith Elementary
Kate Smith School was named after Kate Smith who was a native of Ohio and came to Sparks from Wallace, Idaho. She was self-trained under her mother's supervision. Through correspondence work and summer schools she earned her degree.
Miss Smith was employed as a Sparks High School teacher inside the grammar school later to be named the Robert H. Mitchell School. Several of her former students remember her as a very strict Latin teacher. Students living in Reno came to Sparks High because they wanted to be taught by Kate Smith.
The respected educator soon left Sparks to accept a position as assistant professor of Latin at Berkeley University. Sparks High School seniors dedicated their 1918 annual to Miss Smith after she had left the area. It is believed Kate Smith passed away in 1919.
