Lemmon Valley Elementary School Playground Proposal

Our mission is to create an outdoor learning environment at Lemmon Valley Elementary School that improves and promotes physical, social, and academic achievement. The focus of the Lemmon Valley Elementary School Playground Project is to bring the outside facilities up to date with other schools in Washoe County School District. After recently completing the revitalization of the interior facilities and technology our focus is now on improving our outside grounds to bring them up to the same standards. This request is for funding and volunteer support which includes design, purchase of capital playground equipment, installation and surfacing, including exercise areas and play apparatus on the school grounds.

This project will benefit the 650 existing students under the age of 12 as well as our future generations.   These students need a safe and healthy environment in which to interact. Many students will raise their achievement level, increase their motivation, heighten their understanding, accelerate their learning timeline and expand their creativity. After many years of wear and tear, the playground is outdated and unsafe. The ground cover has been affected by over 40 years of seasonal storms, which have created uneven, poorly draining play areas and worn out equipment.

We have improved the learning of our students by meeting the federally mandated academic Annual Yearly Progress Goal (AYP) for the school year 2009-2010, and we were designated as a high achieving Gold Star school for the year 2009-2010 and Bronze star this year 2010-2011. We continually impact the Mind in the classroom. Support of this project will address the Body and Spirit through physical exercise, combating childhood obesity (which has reached staggering proportions), and create an environment that will promote mental well being. Studies reflect that academic achievement combined with physical activity creates a more positive learning environment, thus lessening behavioral concerns.

Our vision consists of covered areas, benches, and trails for outdoor educational instruction and exploration activities, as well as outdoor luncheons used as incentives with our school wide Positive Behavior Support system. Climbing, slide, and play apparatus will be replaced with new upgraded safe models. As part of the exercise component, there will be and exercise area as well as walking and running paths. These areas will include xeroscape trees, plants, garden, and flower areas that will provide shade and learning opportunities for our students.

We are soliciting help to make our school a great place for future generations to mature and become positive, contributing members in our community. We are proud of our students, parents and extended families, as well as our faculty, staff and administration for doing what’s best for our future leaders.
