Mount Rose School was one of four schools built in Reno in the California Mission Style between 1910 and 1912.  This style of building has the rooms grouped around three sides of a central courtyard framing a fountain (now gone) with a  flagpole.  McKinley Park and Orvis Ring Schools were built first followed by Mary S. Doten and Mount Rose, completed in 1911.  These four schools were known collectively as the "Four Sisters" and the "Spanish Quartette."  Mount Rose School is the last of the four still used as an elementary school.

The school was almost destroyed in 1980 after a safety inspection reported it unsafe in the event of an earthquake.  Through the monumental efforts of some parents and neighbors, Mount Rose School remains an active school in the district. With its unique courtyard, Moorish domes framing the entrance, mature trees, manicured lawns, and beautiful cherry blossoms in the spring, Mount Rose School remains today a timeless gem.

Come by and tour the school to enjoy the beautiful campus, but stop by the office first to obtain a visitor's pass!
