Parents are a child's most important teacher. Of course, the term 'parent' has expanded to mean all caretakers, including grandparents, foster parents, and any adult who is legally responsible for a child. On these pages you will find ideas and suggestions on how to be more involved in your child's education, regardless of which of those terms applies to you. In the Washoe County School District, parent involvement means a whole range of options and choices. Whether it's making sure that their child is well fed, well rested and attends school regularly, or volunteering their time to assist in a classroom, or taking an active role in serving on district committees helping to shape policy -- all are valued activities and all help students to be academically successful. Involving families in the education of their children is a hallmark of this district.
English Language Learners The goal of the English Language Learners (ELL) program is to assist the English language learners enrolled in the ELL program to learn sufficient English to function linguistically and culturally in the WCSD and in the mainstream of American society. The education of the ELLs is a collaborative responsibility shared by the ELL teacher, the classroom teacher, all other appropriate WCSD staff, as well as the ELL student.
