Honors Program/Advanced Placement/
International Baccalaureate

Most high schools offer an Honors Program and Advanced Placement
(AP) courses that provide an academically challenging curriculum for
college preparation and in some instances college credit. Wooster High
School offers the rigorous and comprehensive International Baccalaure-
ate (IB) Program. Truckee Meadows Community College High School
is for juniors and seniors who take required high school classes and can
choose from hundreds of TMCC college classes for college credit.

WCSD is one of the largest school districts in the U.S. mandating
that all students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses take the exams
for those courses. In WCSD, the participating high schools offer a total
of 18 different AP subjects.

During the 2005-2006 school year, 3,539 students AP exams were admin-
registered in WCSD and 329 seniors were designated AP Scholars. At
Wooster High School 61 students took IB classes, 151 IB exams were
administered and ten seniors earned IB Diplomas.

Parent Involvement and Volunteering
Parents and guardians are encouraged to be actively involved in
their child's education at all grade levels. Parents play a vital role in the
education team in the following ways: as school volunteers; members of
a parent/teacher organization or booster club; representatives on shared
decision-making and advisory committees; and participants in school
activities and events. Extended family members and individuals from
our community are also encouraged to volunteer in schools.

For information on parent involvement, call 353-5533 or visit
washoe.k12.nv.us/parents. For information on volunteering, call
851-5655 or visit washoe.k12.nv.us/volunteering.

Community Involvement
The Education Collaborative (EC) is a nonprofit organization which
is funded by WCSD, grants and donations. The EC focuses on K-16
programs in the areas of academic achievement, community partnerships
and workforce development and provides a link between our schools and
the community through the following programs: Advocacy, School to
Careers, Parent Information and Resources, From Crayons to Computers
Warehouse and Partners-in-Education.

Please check the website at www.e-collaborative.org or
call (775) 353-5533 for information on how you,
your business or organization can be involved

Budget
The general operating budget for the 2006-2007 school year is
$382,348,358. 76% of this support comes from local sources,
20% from state sources, and a small amount from Federal
and other sources. Local funds from sales and property tax make up 70%
of the total resources. Per-pupil expenditure from the general operating budget
is $6,065. Nearly 2/3 of every per-pupil dollar is spent on instruction
and instructional support.

Special Services
A complete continuum of special education and related services is
available through neighborhood schools for students with disabilities.
Programs and services include the Child Find Assessment Center
and Marvin Picollo School. Qualifying students needing extra help in reading
or math are served by Title I programs. The District also offers English as
a Second Language (ESL) and a Native American Education program.

Board of Trustees

Washoe County to set school district policy. The board employs a Super-
Intendent to administer the district and carry out policy decisions.
