This "Accepted Practice" resource has been developed by a committee of individuals representing principals, curriculum assistant principals, IT, PPA&A, registrars, middle school secretary IIs, RPDP, CTL, counselors, and Secondary Education. The purpose of the resource is to assist in standardizing certain practices and procedures used by all middle and high schools in this district. These written documents reflect a combination of past practice, preferred practice, memos, directives, practical procedures and formal regulations. Final approval of each Accepted Practice issue represents a consensus of the HS Curriculum Assistant Principals or Middle School Principals. On rare occasions, an Accepted Practice is created, not based on a past practice, but developed in answer to a request from the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education for an expressed purpose and consistent implementation of a practice within Washoe County School District (WCSD).
Although schools may differ in their approaches to many other issues, all schools will abide by the processes set forth in this resource. There will be no exceptions unless expressly applied for and granted by the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education. The information included in "Accepted Practice" should be used by all administrators, deans, registrars, counselors, and other individuals on their school campuses. By having this information in writing and available on the website, other district personnel should also be assisted when answering questions from parents, other district staff, and the community.
The first edition of "Accepted Practice" for high schools was issued in the spring of 2001 with several articulated Accepted Practice documents. New practices have been added throughout the years and are indicated as such with revised and distributed dates. Often times, an Accepted Practice document is revised and the date for revision is also noted. In the winter of 2006, "Accepted Practices" was added to the WCSD website. It should be noted that the official copy of "Accepted Practice" is the current edition on the website.
If there are any questions about or suggestions for additions to the Accepted Practices in this resource, please feel free to contact the Senior Director of High Schools.
The committee members would be remiss if they did not acknowledge the contributions of Dr. Kathy Freemen. Dr. Freeman was the sole reason that "Accepted Practice" was originally created. It was through Dr. Freeman's habit for saving every memo, letter, and resource distributed that the original Accepted Practice documents were created. Kathy was the person responsible for setting up the meetings, providing the rough drafts, copying, distributing, editing, editing, editing, and providing the final product. Although sometimes known as the "Freeman Bible", Dr. Freeman resents the name because she worked tirelessly to honor the input and feedback that committee members, curriculum assistant principals, and the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education gave. Dr. Freeman's efforts are greatly appreciated and this living document will forever be evidence of her professional commitment to "Accepted Practice."
