World-class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA)

Departmental Summary

 

What is WIDA?

            The WIDA consortium is a cooperative of twenty-seven states dedicated to the design and implementation of high educational standards and assessments that promote equitable educational opportunities for English learners. Nevada is not part of the consortium, but has adopted the WIDA standards for implementation in schools.

 

Why WIDA?

            The WIDA consortium was designed to promote educational equity and academic achievement for linguistically and culturally diverse students through the development and dissemination of curricular, instructional, and assessment products and resources.

            WIDA enables teachers to look at complex text/language and prepare students to use language complexly while providing students with a linguistically appropriate sequence of development. Teachers then differentiate instruction, scaffolding for linguistic progress for any student.

            WIDA supports academic language development and academic achievement for linguistically diverse students through high quality standards, assessments, and research.

 

Summary

 

WIDA provides the opportunity for English learners to develop the academic language necessary for success in school. English learners must have opportunities to use and apply language patterns or discourse associated with each subject or content area appropriate for their level of English language proficiency. WIDA provides access to the Common Core standards and is the framework for academic language proficiency to be the bridge between
