Washoe Country School District
What is Child Find?
In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, the Washoe County School District conducts child identification activities in order to increase community awareness and to provide special education services to eligible students between the ages of 2.9 and 5 years old. Home schooled and private schooled students contact Child Find. These older students are assessed at their zoned school per Child Find.
Who can refer a child to Child Find?
Parents, educators, doctors, or other community members may refer a child to Child Find for assessment. The parent or guardian must give permission for the assessment and services.
Which children are eligible for services?
When a child is referred to Child Find, the child will be assessed by an Early Childhood special education teacher, school psychologist, nurse, speech pathologist, and other professional staff as required by the nature of concern. After the assessments have been completed, the staff will meet with the parent to determine eligibility. If a child is found eligible, and the parent consents to services, an IEP is developed. Once a placement decision is made, services are provided at the closest program that can implement the IEP. The child will start at the new school site with an IEP in place.
