Section 504
What is a Section 504?
Section 504 is a federal civil rights legislation designed to eliminate discrimination on the basis of disability in any program or activity. Section 504 allows for the provision of specialized accommodations for regular education students who exhibit physical or mental impairments which substantially impact a major life activity.
What is a Section 504 Accommodation Plan?
The team is the designated vehicle for identification of Section 504 cases. The school principal or administrative designee is the school site coordinator for Section 504. The team must consider if there is a substantial limitation on learning. In comparison to the average student in the general population, the team must look at how this impairment demonstrates an adverse affect, in terms of severity and duration, upon the students' ability to access the general curriculum, participate in the educational process or educational performance.
Specialized accommodations, such as testing accommodations and accommodations within the classroom are discussed and can be provided within the regular education environment. There are no modifications with Section 504, only accommodations.
