Speech and Language

What is Speech and Language Therapy?

A Speech and Language therapist/pathologist (SLT/SLP) may be requested when there is a concern about a child's speech, language, voice, or fluency.  If the only concern is speech (articulation, phonology, fluency, or voice), the SLT/SLP assists the classroom teachers with scheduling an IAT meeting with the parents, teacher, and any other member who may need to be involved.  If there are language concerns, the SLP/SLT does not initiate the IAT process but directs the classroom teacher to a school site IAT coordinator.  Language includes pragmatics (social language), grammar, ayntax, and morphology (phonological awareness).

Who is the case manager for Speech and Language if a child has another disability?

The special education teacher would be the child's case manager if the child is eligible under a different category.  Speech and Language would be a related service provider.  If a child is Speech and Language Impairment only, the SLP/SLT would be the child's case manager.
