Special Education Novice Teachers

Special Education novice teachers are in their first year of teaching special education.  Novices are required to participate in the Special Education Induction and Mentoring Program unless exempted by their principal.  Typically, novices meet weekly with a site mentor (usually not a special education teacher) for site specific information and support.  Novices also meet consistently with a Special Education Mentor.  This mentor will either be a full release Consulting Teacher or a "job alike" mentor who is currently teaching in the same specialty area as the novice.  Novices will receive support regarding lesson plans, management, instruction, IEPs, etc.  They schedule teaching episodes for their mentor(s) to observe and give confidential feedback.  They also take a sub day to visit other classrooms to observe veteran teachers.  Novice teachers attend the Novice On-Site Seminar (if available at their school site) as well as other New Teacher Academy classes.  At the end of the year, novices will be asked to evaluate the program.
